  • What is tallow?
Tallow is rendered (boiled down) beef fat. In particular, we use suet or leaf fat that surrounds kidneys, heart and loins. This fat is higher in nutrients and contains important fatty acids, such as stearic acid and conjugated linoleic acid. Tallow is different from lard, which comes from pork.
  • Why is tallow good for your skin?
Intensive moisturizer, tallow shares a similar biology to our human skin and provides deep hydration and moisturize deeper than other products. Tallow has vitamins A, D, K, E & B12 and minerals. Vitamin A (retinol) helps produce fresh, new cells & can improve wrinkles. Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory, helps prevent skin from aging damage. Tallow has ample essential fatty acids. Such as: 1.Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): Conjugated Linoleic Acid aka CLA is an essential fatty acid that is responsible for the free flowing of moisture in and out of our cells. 2. Omega 7: basic building block of our skin 3. Palmitic acid: helps protect our skin barrier 4. Stearic acid: helps repair damage & improve flexibility, elasticity 5. Vitamin E: very important fat-soluble antioxidant, helps protect the skin from UV damage, soothes irritated skin 6. Vitamin A (retinol, retinoic acid) has antioxidants that might protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Tallow also creates a skin barrier that is soothing and is helpful for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, as it aids in preventing environmental factors from irritating the skin.
  • What is the difference between whip and balm?
Whip has a fluffy, velvety feel to it that is easy to rub into the skin and ideal for larger parts of the body. It is lighter and therefore can be used on your face before make-up. Balm has more of a salve consistency, that can be used on areas that need extra nourishment like elbows, heals, armpits and eczema patches. The balm is also ideal for babies with dry skin on the head & diaper rashes.
  • Is all tallow the same?
Nope. We use grass-fed and grass-finished tallow, as they contain high amounts of conjugated linoleic acid. This also means that the cows are not fed GMO’s, corn, soy or antibiotics. Our tallow is also from a regenerative farm that uses practices such as rotational grazing pastures and focuses on soil health.
  • What is the quality of your ingredients?
Quality, quality, quality. I first fell in love with tallow for the quality of the product and its nutritional profile. I liked putting something on my face, I could also eat. This is important because your skin is your largest organ, where it gets absorbed and on to the blood stream! I try to use organic as much as possible. Not all of the essential oils I use are regularly available as organic, as they are rare and difficult to procure. My castor oil is hexane free. I also try to use amber glass containers, as much as they are available.
  • What if my product melts?
If your product does melt and the oils may separate, it will not change the effectiveness of the product. Simply mix and the oils back together, gently. You can also place in the refrigerator to resolidify. Tallow does melt at 95-104 degrees F. Always store tallow in a cool, dry location. *Please note, tallow skin care products can melt in the summer heat if packages are left on the porch or mailbox. We do not offer refunds or replacement for melted products. However, if your products do melt, please contact us and we can help bring your balms back to their perfect consistency. If whips melt in the heat, they will become the consistency of the tallow balm (they are still perfect to use, but the product will be more concentrated).
  • Batch to batch inconsistencies?
We are a small-batch production, which means we don’t make vats upon vats of our products. They are made in small batches to help ensure quality and consistencies. However, batches can vary based on the tallow and the cow’s environment changes, species of the cow, the cow’s age and their diet. While our products may vary in consistency at times, beyond our control, the quality and the effectiveness remains the same.
  • What is the shelf life of tallow?
Tallow can last up to one year if it is maintained in the proper environment. You can also place your tallow in the freezer to increase the shelf life. Our tallow is rendered without additives or preservatives. However, vitamin E can act as a natural preservative and therefore extend the shelf life to one year. Tallow is low in polyunsaturated fatty acids and therefore they are stable when exposed to heat, oxygen and light. Most skincare products go rancid due to the exposure to these elements.
  • Is tallow suitable for all skin types?
Tallow offers multiple benefits for the skin. It deeply moisturizes and conditions the skin, thanks to its fat-soluble vitamins and fatty acids which are similar to those found in the outermost layer of human skin. Tallow is considered non-comedogenic for its ability not to clog pores. Tallow is also known for its ability to strengthen the skin's natural barrier, making it resilient against environmental stressors. If you have sensitive skin, they first try our unscented tallow products on a test patch of your skin, after consulting with your medical provider.
  • Is tallow safe for babies and children?
Yes! Our products have zero preservatives, additives and are non-toxic. Our tallow is an excellent, natural moisturizer that can replace your petroleum based products. We use the highest quality available. We recommend you first try our unscented tallow products on a test patch of your skin, after consulting with your medical provider.
